ESOcast 3: The World's Largest Astronomical Project: The ALMA Observatory Gets Its First "Eye".

In this third episode of the ESOcast Dr. J takes us to the site of ALMA, the Atacama Millimeter / submillimeter Array in the Atacama region in Chile. ALMA is an observatory under construction 5000 metres above sea-level, on the plateau of Chajnantor high enough to be literally breathtaking.

ESO is the European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere. Created in 1962, ESO provides state-of-the-art research facilities to European astronomers and astrophysicists and is supported by Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Several other countries have expressed a strong interest in joining the organisation. Whilst the Headquarters (comprising the scientific, technical and administrative centre of the organisation) are located in Garching near Munich, Germany, ESO operates, in addition to the Santiago Centre, three observational sites in the Chilean Atacama desert.

  • It's probably "only" a week's worth of money spent in Iraq.

  • "who the fuck has that much money to spend in the name of science"

Yeah, we should spend our money on important stuff, like invading and occupying countries which pose no real threat to us or anybody else.

  • What if our ENTIRE WORLD could become unified (I do not mean "one world government" just unified), if all wars could end and all the nations of the world were to work together to further science and exploration. Alma would be like one "hole in the wall" noodle store in Chinatown compared to how much science infrastructure there would be!

  • @mistergarth NO, what we REALLY need to spend the money on is the WAR ON DRUGS. We MUST get rid of any substances politicians and the pharmaceutical companies do not approve of! And dont forget BAILOUTS for irresponsible banks! That is way more important than this telescope!

  • Bien por Chile, tenemos los cielos mas limpios del mundo, ideal para la observación astronómica.

  • (ALMA) is an international partnership between Europe, North America, East Asia and the Republic of Chile.

  • Chile <3!

  • @clerlic thats likely, i wish the uk would becomg even more involved with esa, atm they are sought of scratching on the edges

  • shitty green screen

i want some fucking production value!

    dammit

  • Bien por Chile, America y el mundo.

El norte chileno se ha convertido en el principal observador del universo, eso gracias a sus cielos limpios y sin humedad.

  • Amazing what science can do for our understanding of ourselves & our place in the infinate universe.

  • AMAZING technology that giant red thing!...

..oh wait, that's his jacket 0_O
