Our Opportunity to Change the World

Thomas Edison said "Opportunities are missed because they are dressed in overalls and look like work". Today, as the current caretakers of this planet, we are repeatedly challenged to take advantage of opportunities to improve our lives, the environment and the world. Knowledge, which is something that we in the privileged world have available at the click of a "mouse", is a vital ingredient in improving one's quality of life. Through our innate drive for discovery and innovation, we have the opportunity to share information in ways never imaginable with those never thought possible.

Innovations represent opportunities to share knowledge. These opportunities will help bridge the digital divide -- the gap that exists between those of us fortunate enough to benefit from technology and those of us who are unable to do so. For instance, the EDUSAT Program in India utilizes education satellites to create virtual classrooms in remote areas where no classroom has ever existed. Furthermore, the One Laptop Per Child initiative empowers underprivileged children of the developing world with the opportunity to learn, explore and express themselves.

I espouse that we must take action on both a micro and macro level to bridge the digital divide worldwide. It is incumbent upon my generation to seize the opportunity to share information. The children of the world are depending on us. A remarkable opportunity is knocking on my generation's door. This opportunity is what excites me about the world.
