  • The noise is being caused by 1 of 2 things;

    1. The exhaust manifold is loose and rattling

    (this can be solved by going to a muffler shop where they will tighten it or possibly even remove it)

    2. a bracket hold the dash on is loose causing the noise.

    (The inside of the dash can most likely be accessed from either the right side of the passenger side. there will be a semi-circle shaped door on the side, or possibly from the glove box)

    If I can definitely locate the noise and fix it, I will post

  • @Sanske

    it was definatly not an exhaust thing. It was something plastic. I tried once to touch thing behind console after removing golve box but no chance.

  • What does that MD/Tape button do??????? And how come that button underneath the gear release trigger for an automatic protoge doesnt do anything????

  • @xThugLife94x

    i really dont know what that md/tape bt was, but anyways this car has been totaled some one month ago.

  • i get the same annoying sound on mine. if you figured it out let me know plz it drives me insane when i pass 1700 rpm lol

  • unfortunately, i still have this crazy rattle. Its driving me crazy because sometimes its 10 time louder. And i dont know why, but its always at the same rpm spot. always there, waiting to get on my nerves.

    the other day i popped the hood and i can hear it clearly. i can get really close to it, but its behing the metal. For real, i cant stand it anymore, but at the same time, i cant remove the entire dash...i dont even think i can reach it evne if i remove the glove box.

  • I took out my stereo and replaced it using the plastic adapter to use aftermarket systems. if it isn't an exhaust issue, then it must be a dash mounting bracket. It's getting on my nerves and wasn't always doing this. I'm starting to do alot of engine work and messing around with things that can cause this noise. Again, I'll post if I find the issue

  • I own a 2002 protege 5 and I also have this rattle around 1700 to 1800 rpm. The rattle does seem to come from behind the stereo when driving but that is purely perspective. I had a mechanic help me identify the area of the noise while I revved the engine. From the engine with the hood open, the noise seems to come from the back of the engine behind the headers. After investigating the interior, the noise appears to be coming from inside the passenger dash
