It's slightly smaller than your TV cabinet and weighs a bit more than your school-going kid. But it's going where no TV and no kid has ever been before. It's called the Moon Impact Probe (MIP) — India's first attempt at touching down on the lunar surface.

The MIP will detach from the Chandrayaan a 100 km above the moon. As it falls, it will keep sending information back to the satellite.

Closer to the surface, rockets will be fired, to slow down its speed and soften impact. After half an hour of free fall, the MIP will crash-land on the south pole of moon.

It was former president APJ Abdul Kalam who thought of sending MIP to the moon. If it weren't for him, Chandrayaan would only have orbited the moon.

  • I am not a conspiracy theorist but there are some serious questions regarding the US landing on the moon !!! It was in 70 's think of the Planes they were having during that period !! The Tech required for "manned mission" was as challenging as its today !!! But just think of the computers during early 70's makes me feel thats its really very difficult , and USSR backed up easily maybe they figured that its not worth the result. If NASA had landed thn why they are so curious about Chandrayan ??

  • @5yearplan1 ok sending 100kg probe around the moon versus sending 45 tons of command module and lander to the moon and back is like 10 orders of magnitude in money, technology, complexity, rocket booster size, planning, coordination, you name it. You have to take the small steps first.

P.S. Feel free to whip the chinese, we'll enjoy it.

  • americans did it first, we must acknowledge this

  • we saw Armestrong pants on the moon!!

    heheh

  • hehehe.. you would be happy if we did something like the Chinese at the olympics.. 1 girl to do the real singing and another to lip sync?

  • Do not fear Chris. Americans totally walked on the moon, and we are proud of that nation for doing that. We as Indians are taking that baton and continuing the proud legacy of Americans.

  • I fear for india. They might find something on the moon that the Governments don't want them to see. next thing you know Korea will drop a bomb on them before they can show the world what they found.

    Government is evil.

  • American probably never walked on the moon.

As you know America was in competition against anotherr and they were winning. So America went to the moon to show them "hah we win nananananah".

    Maybe...
