  • when she heard that Mom had "murdered that magnificent bird." It got to be kind of a big deal for a while, until the county sheriff, a friend of my dads' steeped in and put her in her place. If only we had more men like him, now.

  • Great story, Dusty! Puts me in mind of something that happened when I was 9 years od, back in '63. My mom was feeding cracked corn to our chickens, when a red tail hawk swooped down and grabbed one. She saw red, grabbed her .222 and knocked the thing down before it was a hundred feet off of the ground. Peacock proud, I cut off the birds feet and took them in to school, for show and tell.
