Halifax Radical Cheerleaders open for Stephen Lewis at Alexa McDonough's nomination meeting in Halifax, NS.

Given the abysmal representation of women in Canada's federal government, we enthusiastically support a candidate such as Alexa.

From www.equalvoice.ca
• Once a leader, Canada, with just 64 women in Parliament -- 20.7% of MPs -- now ranks 47th in the world among democracies in terms of women's representation in the national legislature, after Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Portugal.

• Focus on the issue in other countries has delivered results: Wales recently became the first jurisdiction to elect 50% women, ahead of Sweden (45%) and other Nordic countries which have long been best at electing women. Recently Rwanda topped them, however, and became the nation with the most elected women at 48.8 per cent.

• Canada has been slipping in terms of the number of women candidates running for Parliament -- falling from a high of 476 women candidates in 1993 to just 373 in the last federal election. Liberal women candidates dropped from a high of 84 in 1997 to just 66 in 2000.

  • Good job, that was wonderful! I was wondering if you could post the video of Stephen Lewis's speech. Could you?

  • i only have a bit of it (my battery died!!), but i'll see what i can do. it won't be for a week or so, but i'll msg you when i get something up

  • Stan Rogers would be proud. But would he support a group that unwittingly killed KYOTO by bringing Harper to power?

Head to Head, Toe to Toe, LIBERAL is the way to go!

  • innnteresting -- there is certainly merit to what you say! but there's also something to be said for throwing support behind feminist women running for federal politics.

  • "i also asked him whether he thought we'd qualify for funding under the new Status of Women mandate. . ."

    Nice one!

  • haha, thanks! i'm not going to hold my breath, for sure

  • he came to my skool yesterday

  • nnnteresting -- there is certainly merit to what YOU say! I like you want them front and center. Dion is taking a big risk to recruit females as you know. There is much yet to be done, Tory policy ie.their "thinly veiled " income splitting will hurt women and set them back. How about Wage Parady first? The bus is leaving....

  • I would LOVE to hear that Harper or Oda watched this video.
