Dave Calendine playing In The Mood on the Chicago Stadium Barton Theatre Pipe Organ now installed in Phil Maloof's residence in Las Vegas, NV. This is pretty raw, being that it is my first time at the place, and I had only been at the organ for about 5 minutes before this was recorded. It was fun!

  • There are very few electronic ranks on this organ. It is mostly pipes. There are pipes from several other organs that are a part of this instrument now. Being that it is practically 90% pipes, how the heck does that make it an electronic organ? That just doesn't make any sense.

  • It's an OUTRAGEOUS console! Presumably people who don't memorise music can't play it . . . ? Where could a music stand go?

  • The music rack is up there ... WAY up there. It's right above the top keyboard. Basically though, you are right, putting music up there and reading it while playing would give your neck a good pain. And think of how far you'd have to reach up to change pages!

  • how much of the original voicing was kept? I imagine that an instrument of that size and scale in such a confined space would be quite loud. How much do you give your neighbors to keep them from calling the cops? lol

  • When the organ was removed from the old stadium, the pipes were put into a large storage area. The console was taken elsewhere. Unfortunately, the storage facility caught fire, and all of the original pipework was destroyed. The only thing that remains from the old stadium organ is the console. So, in effect, none of the original voicing was kept!

In its current location, it is now controlling about 40 ranks, and growings. The entire console was redone to accomodate the new sounds.

  • Chicago Stadium organ. To stop a riot during a boxing match, Al Melgard played the organ as loud as possible. Power? It started to break light bulbs and windows in the Chicago Stadium. The riot stopped. For his actions, Al Melgard was signed to a lifetime contract.

  • Yes, sad to say it is. It sounds nothing like it did in its original and best home, the Chicago Stadium.

  • @DaveCalendine There may be some confusion. The action of most theatre organs was operated via electric solenoids.

  • Hey dude! We got the same shoes! That's rad!

  • @snowman5676 That's why I can't stand Pellico. But I wonder if the original plans still exist? Because I'd love to get an idea of what the United Center would've looked like with the organ installed.

  • Just think this could of been in the united center original plans were drawn up for the Barton, but Frank Pellico who by the way looks like a street bum talked old man Wirtz out of moving it across the street.

  • @redbull101991 Actually it's only a 6 manual, but yes she is a beast :) In the Chicago Stadium she had nearly 4,00o pipes. Sounded like she had about 3 times as many pipes with how loud she could get! :D

  • O.o I don't think i have ever seen 7 manual organs! That's a beast!

  • Sounds excellent to me. To bad about the original pipes. I heard they were consumed in a fire. Is that correct?

  • Doesn't sound raw to me. Great stuff buddy.

  • The console was not left the same, and that is a GOOD thing. The original console was starting to fall apart. None of the pistons worked. The decorations on the sides were badly worn away. The whole console got redone with new stoptabs and pistons, which all work. Phil also had an amazing artist come in and redo the entire outside of the console to make it breathtakingly beautiful again.

  • @DaveCalendine i thought the console was left the same
