Edward, (The Mad Shirt Grinder), Nicky Hopkins' grand opus for Quicksilver Messenger Service. Recorded at a concert sometime in early 1970 before John and Nicky left Quicksilver Messenger Service.

I tried to restore some of the dynamic range to this recording; whoever had jacked into the sound board was forced to drastically lower the input volume during the performance to capture the thunderous finale without distortion. I couldn't get rid of the tape hiss without introducing even more timing distortion to the rather low 128kbps mp3 I had to work with, but I did the best I could.

The video in part is a comment on the paucity of Quicksilver Messenger Service available on you tube at the time. There is some great stuff out there now; true concert footage remains rare, and any hardcore fan of the band will want to get the limited edition 3 DVD set "Recoil" which includes never before seen video (seen by me anyway) of Quicksilver Messenger Service live in concert! A truly bitchin' extended psychedelic version of Who Do You Love is my personal fave! Watching the duel lead guitars of John Cipollina and Gary Duncan is something to see!

anyway, get "Recoil" here while it's still available

Enjoy!
:)

oh and be sure to catch a Quicksilver Messenger Service show featuring founding members Gary Duncan and David Freiberg, they are few and far between!

  • Edward must be the pinnacle of psychdelia when it comes to two gifted musicians like John and Nicky.

IMHO the best dueling between to different instruments while the band reaches a chrish-

    endo of orgasmic perportions.

This song by QsMS should go down in history as a piece of musical Rock genius like a Beethoven's 5th or 9th.

I'm just glad I was around to hear and enjoy it for 40 years.

    RIP QsMS especially John C.

  • Great stuff Aurora! MORE.....

  • omg this music does something strange and magical to me, add in your amazing graphics and well.. you've got me!

  • Thanks for sharing this. Nicky Hopkins was a master pianist. Edward is a song I used to listen to on an old Shady Grove vinyl. What ever happened to it I don't know, as it's a collectors item for sure. QMS was one of the many fine San Francisco bands I used to see at the Fillmore in the late 60's. What a place, and what great music, Airplane, Santana, It's a Beautiful Day, The Dead you name it. And the light shows were amazing. What fine memories!

  • this is really amazing friend.I don't have this version but hear mine at youtube.ThanX for sharing this..i love QMS.
