Venus Isd school bus crash

JOHNSON COUNTY — Four students were among six people who suffered minor injuries Wednesday afternoon when a brand-new motor home crashed into a Venus ISD school bus in rural Johnson County.

The accident site was near the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 157 and County Road 507, about seven miles west of Midlothian.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said 73-year-old Don Pierson of Canton, Texas, was behind the wheel of the luxury motor home when it rear-ended the school bus in Venus at 4:30 p.m.

"We had a bus stop, and then we had another one stop right behind it, and then a motor home ran into the back of one of the buses," said Venus ISD Superintendent Bobby Matthews. "I don't believe they had enough time to stop and rear-ended one of the buses."

Gloria Pierson used the car they had been towing to drive her husband to Methodist Hospital in Mansfield, troopers said. The Piersons had just purchased the 2011 Entegra Cornerstone Coach on Tuesday.

Matthews said there were no serious injuries reported aboard Bus No. 5. "So far, we think we have one broken leg, and that's the most severe thing we have up to this moment," he told News 8. "A lot of bruises and cuts, but that's about as bad as it is."

School bus driver Joshua Stepp, 34, of Cleburne, was taken to a hospital for treatment along with two 17-year-old girls, a 14-year-old boy and a seven-year-old boy. All of the injuries were described as non-life threatening.

The accident caused extensive damage to both the back of the school bus and the front of the motor home, which retails for well over $500,000.

The school bus ended up on the side of the road in a ditch, but it did not turn over.

Students were seen standing on the side of the road being interviewed by paramedics and school officials.

No citations were issued by troopers immediately following the accident.
