General Gavin's KIWI pod system was finally partially fielded with the Sikorsky S-64/CH-54 Tarhe heavy lift helicopter now being produced by Erickson Aircrane. We should fully exploit the modularity of pods by interfacing with the world standard ISO shipping container intermodal system:

And develop the aircraft to exploit pod modularity:

T-tail ramp equipped aircraft can airdrop items, but they have to FIRST BE LOADED into their fuselages. The point is to fix the entire Army and have it READY-TO-FIGHT AT ALL TIMES BECAUSE ITS ALREADY LOADED IN PODS THAT SPECIAL AIRCRAFT ONLY HAVE TO PICK UP THE POD, saving hundreds of hours of working around a few aircraft fuselages.

  • the chinook doesn't need to loose its fusolodge, it can lift more then the F model already.

  • A Chinook without a fuselage would gain 6 tons of payload it cannot lift now with a built-in fuselage.

  • The CH-47 Chinook might make a decent Skycrane --- it's already got a large area under the roof that doesn't need to be attached for it to fly.

If modified into a skycrane, it could still perform all the same missions as a rehular Chinook. Just leave the cargo pod attached.

And don't even THINK about a V-22 Albatross Skycrane --- it can barely lift ITSELF into the air!

  • If Boeing were smart...they'd create a CH-47F Chinook SkyCrane to gain 6 tons of extra lift for M113 Gavins and other light tanks and/or make a CH-47G Chinook SpeedCrane version with wings and Jarnot's engines with props for forward thrust:

  • Put more of these one man, really intresting about the pods for tarhe. Thats a good idea do put containers under em, are they short enough tho?

  • Yes, SkyCranes already carry steel ISO containers.

  • have to say dynmicpara watched a number of your postings now, and you're wasted on here shame the defence bigwigs don't log on might learn something and actually buy/think of something useful

  • i crewed a CH54B here in Alabama from 1986 until about 1993. Chinooks were then forced on us. a/c 279 & 263 are still here on display. 2 flyable Skycranes as well 2 boneyard a/c ended with Ericcson.

  • PROUD TO HAVE BEEN AN F/E ON A 'B' MODEL FOR ALOTTA YEARS IN THE CT. NG FULL TIME. (has anybody seen my a/c 69-18462 tink its in italy) WORKED AND FLEW WITH THE BEST VIETNAM ERA PILOTS AND MECHS ON EARTH. GOT ALOT OF GREAT STORYS ABOUT THIS WONDERFUL SHIP. p.s. how many hours winter flite time do have have freezing your ars of cause the heater flew the coop? MANY CRANES ARE UP AND RUNNING TODAY BECAUSE OF ERICKSON AIRCRANE AND A FEW OTHERS. THANX GUYS!!!

  • heh, i guess so. haha man that would look strange a duel prop sky crane. but then again i guess we could argue about taking the super stallions fuselage off or even more crazy the mil 26's.

  • I have worked with theese helicopters for 27 years. I would like to point out that the E-Model will lift 20,000 lbs and the F-Model will lift 25,000 lbs. The pod is nothing when it comes to this helicopters lifting capabilities.
