The AP reports the approval of a new tax amnesty program in Illinois. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed a law on Monday that would allow people "who were overdue on taxes over the past eight years to pay before facing double penalty and interest payments." Officials hope that this tax amnesty program will raise $250 million by this fall. The AP further reports that "people owing the state any taxes due from July 1, 2002 through July 1, 2009 may pay during the amnesty period of Oct. 1 to Nov. 8." Sue Hofer, a spokeswoman for the Revenue Department state that "the idea is to bring in overdue tax money more quickly than if officials continued to pursue collection efforts without the incentive."
