Jack Cassady is my first / last hero.
Last month I got 67 Guild Starfire bass. So I tried an instrumental tune of Hot Tuna.

I don't know how he set up his equipments when recording.
This is my set up
1)Recorded the bass in plain condition.
Starfire to RME Fireface800 thru AvalonU5
2)Copied the track and added effects individually.
One is bass-boost,another is Distortion and Compressor
3)A little bit moved one of those two tracks for phase-shift.

Though I needed more sustain for the distortion track, but I could not find better effects.

The Guitar is Taylor310.
Recorded in mix with AKG C414 and AvalonU5 from LRBaggs Dual Source pickup.
I could not play well so I recorded double :-)

Jack's bass was modified Starfire2(2pickup type) (Or Alembic?? I don't know)
So it may be difficult to sound like his by one-pickuped Starfire.
But It's OK. I'm just a fan of JC :-)

  • I rebuilt a rickenbacker 4001 bass with two starfire bass pickups (the older nonhumbucking type) and the damn thing sounded basically like a rick bass on steroids. Try this experiment: in a quiet room, unplug your Starfire bass, lean real close to it, and play. your ear will hear the classic starfire bass tone- with no amp, no speaker, no nothing. The tone is developed by the neck and body! I was so disappointed that I took the bass apart and used the pickups for other projects. -Niels Nielsen

  • @san5a89 I've never tried to put Guild PU on solid body. And I don't know what is your bass.

So this is just my opinion.

  • @GOMENTE Oh so you think a solid body bass would change the sound very much if I put the pup in a position or in an other?

Is the hollow body bass so homogeneous? I never tried an hollow one!

  • @san5a89 Is your bass hollow bodied? If so, I think the bridge is also OK.

But you can hear the sound of tapping the PU from JC's playing. So I think the neck is better.

(Actually the mix is the best)

  • @GOMENTE so it's like a gibson eb-0? I like casady's sound very much...

I saw an other guy with a guild like that and the pup in the bridge position. So I ask you that question!

  • @san5a89 Neck is better,I think. But it depends on what kind of music you wanna play. Thanks

  • hey I have to build a guild humbucker in a bass. Where can I put to have a better sound? Near the neck or near the bridge?

  • Dead on. Thanks!

  • @kharmakreep Thanks. Visit crownofcreation68 channel.

He's awesome about Jefferson Airplane and Jack Casady.
