There are only a handful of war movies and/or historical films that portray the men that fight battles realistically, and two of them — both "starring" Theodore Roosevelt ("The Wind and the Lion" and "Rough Riders") — are by John Milius. "Rough Riders" is an unforgettable film on the events of the Spanish-American War and it is too bad that more movies cannot be like this or like films such as "Zulu", "Gettysburg", or "The Longest Day".

In this brilliant outtake that shows the pathos of the departure to the front, the troops of Teddy Roosevelt's (Tom Berenger's) 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry fall in under the orders of Captain Bucky O'Neill (Sam Elliott) for the train ride east across the South to Florida (for embarkation to Cuba), discovering in the process that the wounds of the Civil War (or the War Between the States, to make everybody happy) have started to heal, all to the tune of Garryowen, stunningly sung by Elan Oberon (who happens to be Milius' wife).

If there are DVDs that all Americans (hell, that all people everywhere) should own, this is one of them — don't miss other outstanding portrayals, notably Marshall Teague as Black Jack Pershing and Gary Busey, utterly outstanding in the role of Fighting Joe Wheeler.

  • It is a shame that such a beautiful Irish marching song like Garryowen was also used by the men under Custer and Sheridan when they tried to all but wiped out the Native Americans in the Dakotas...still its use as a marching song in the Spanish-American War and later World War 1 has more than made up for that one dark chapter in its history.

  • Does "that one dark chapter in its history" also refer to such events as, say, the near-total wiping out of the Huron nation and the theft of the land of the Apaches? Well, then it might interest darthroden that the people who wiped out the Hurons were the Iroquois and that those who stole the land of the Apaches — and who did their utmost to wipe out the people of Geronimo — were the Comanches…

  • Rough Riders is a great movie. Tom Berenger was brilliant in the opening monologue. This part always brings a tear because it's about deployment. I left my family from Wright-Patterson AFB, loaded into a C-141, and flew to Croatia for UN Peacekeeping duty. We all came back, but some with whom we worked in the UN Hospital did not. Deployment is ALWAYS a gut-wrencher, and it was great to come back to my familyand retire from the USAF a year later. God bless our troops!

  • guess i gott-a set the record stright..back in the late 60s i met a old soldier that went up san juan hill,,when he died he left me his gauntlets he wore during the charge, still have them today,,he also gave me some knowledge about good old teddy and his actuall involvement with the charge...he did not lead the charge as most historians think,,he was not all that close to the front line,,yes he did order the charge up san juan hill,,but lead it,,NO..i am 65,this guy was 90 in 65..

  • @jip28 The media came them differant nick names untill Rough Riders stuck They called the well to do group of Vols, Fifth Ave Boys or sometimes Fifth Ave Cowboys..but they FOUGH with out a cosey postion in rank, they freely vol and willingly served, I have to admire that.

  • @draoi99 Well, he served his country, have you

  • God Bless the boys of 1898

  • 2:20, seeing John Bell Hood say that puts a smile on my face (same actor who played him from "Gettysburg" and "Gods and Generals)

  • @Asteriks Thank you for pointing out that atrocities aren't restricted exclusively to white society and that other ethnic groups resorted to force to their achieve political, economic or military hegemony. While the Indian and Plains Wars involved odious, distasteful atrocities, I often wonder where we would be as a nation had we not forced our way west.

  • @Asteriks

Its more shame that you don't know your American history. Gen. Custer used "Yankee Doodle" when going into battle against Johnny Rebs during the Civil War.. Garryowen was an old Irish drinking song. Ironically Custer didn't drink after his four years at West Point. He gave the 7th Cavalry Regiment its identity with this great song. He thought it went well with horse cavalry. I can understand Sheridan but not the Boy General. Custer Died For Your Sins- Vine De Loria (Sioux)

  • Fuck Teddy Roosevelt, he was a war-mongering imperialist scumbag.

  • @ColumbiaRules Yeah well, according to some documents the US was not allowed to attack Spain.
