This video contains the information you need to know to make an informed purchase of the Lenovo w510 work station. This computer is nearly identical to the w520 in terms of exterior features. This review is designed for serious people about to make the purchase, hence the length and detail. The summary review ends at 1:53 and the in depth review follows for the rest of the video. More information about the computer can be found on my site. www.infinitedefinitives.wordpress.com

This is by far the best laptop PC brand on the market. Higher performance, reliability and tech support at a lower price than all other PCs I've researched of equivalent setup.

No notorious issues with Lenovo either, not like Alienware or XPS heating issues, Macintosh quality control issues, or HP stability issues. This is a solid and stable professional computer.

Specs:
i7 820QM Quad Core Processor
8GB RAM at 1333mhz speed (two dimms currently open, expandable to 16GB)
160GB Intel SSD
Nvidia Quattro FX 880M Graphics Card
Multi touch 15.6" 1080p full HD display - 1920x1080
9 Cell Li-Ion Battery
Windows Professional 64 bit
Bluetooth

$1682.13

Only equivalent setup is the M4500 from Dell, which is $2510 and doesn't have USB 3.0, multi touch display, long battery life, efficient heat dissipation, and more.

I bought the W510 workstation new from the manufacturer's website: Lenovo.com

On the site you have the option to shop as a student (if you are a student), which gave me 5% off the price. Then I used a manufacturer's eCoupon for an additional 20%. The coupons come and go, last summer Lenovo had a 30% coupon, currently I think they have a 10% for the W510. The coupons are totally legitimate, you just enter the appropriate code at checkout. I don't use secondary sources for coupon codes. Here is the current link:

Windows 7 Performance index:

Processor: 7.1/7.9 (i7 820QM)
Memory: 7.4/7.9 (8GB 1333mhz)
Graphics: 6.5/7.9 (1GB FX 880M Quattro)
Gaming Graphics 6.5/7.9 (1GB FX 880M Quattro)
Primary hard disk: 7.6/7.9 (Intel 160GB SSD)

Lowest score is 6.5 -- but it doesn't take into account that the graphics utilizes Quattro architecture, which is more stable, runs OpenGL well and is powerful.

Update Thursday, January 27th 2011:
On the W510 Audio
The W510's audio is good, but not so good for true music listening. It's more suited for television shows and similar types of audio. When it comes to harmonies and bass, the speakers tend to buzz and distort. But this is the same issue with all laptops.

If you buy ANY laptop and want to listen to some good music, I would hit up some Logitech speakers or Sony headphones, to name a few preferred brands. My personal Sony headphones are the MDR-V600. They're cheap, great quality and has a long extension cord.

Speaking of music, if you appreciate performing some classical music once in a while, I have piano tutorials on my website:

Update Tuesday, February 1st, 2011:
Refer to the video on this link to see how I expedited my order by ten days. I simply called the phone number posted on the manufacturer's website:

Thanks for the great feedback I've been getting on my videos. You may look around my YouTube channel for more stuff, updated regularly. My website, infinitedefinitives.wordpress.com , is basically the same thing as my YouTube channel, but with even more content that is in a more clear and organized format.

P.S. Always use a bright room to film a computer's monitor!

  • If you have questions, post them here and I will send you a message.

  • @infiniteDefinitives what do you use this awesome computer for? would you recommend it for a student?

  • @TheOnlyChocomonsta The two main programs that can really use this computer are Solidworks/AutoCad (engineering software which utilizes the nvidia Quadro architecture and huge amounts of RAM) and 1080p movie editing like Sony Vegas, which requires a multi-thread/multi-core processors.

If you require power for artistic (re: adobe software suite), engineering or programming applications, go for this model. I take it everywhere with me, but keep in mind that it's not a featherweight.

  • wow u are awesome!

Do you think the ThinkPad W510 is still a viable purchase nowadays? Im looking for a workingstation and this thing seems to give me most performance for least money...

  • Mine doesn't have integrated finger print scanner

  • Really nice review ! But SSD does not make anything safer or secure. It's also proven that it does not consume less energy. Are the speakers really that nice ? All other reviews I've seen describe them as "muffled" and disapointing.

  • Is a Lenovo ThinkPad W520 good for recording and producing music?

I already have an external sound card so that is not an issue. Looking for a high-quality studio on the go. Will a Lenovo ThinkPad W520 do the job?

  • Having said what I said. This is actually one of the best Lenovo reviews out there.

  • No one ever does a 1 year or 2 year review. Everyone is a fanboy worshipping the new models. We never hear of any problems we could have with a given unit. What good are these reviews? They're only good to make you feel good , and in that way, they are a new kind of a commercial.

  • Do all of the W510 and W520 series laptops have multi touch displays?

  • Thank you for the review, I just got a used w510 for 900 bux,

I think I made a good deal, I can't wait to get it,

I hope I will be just as happy you are
