This is my preferred way for the cold. i've been doing it this way for years. As i use an air mattress, i limit condensation by placing the blanket under the air mattress. and obviously you can fold the other half over your bag, if needed.

some one told me to put one sleeping bag in another .. two cheap ones are good.

Not bad for summer camping, I guess. But why worry about thermal pads and extra blankets in the winter? Snow is an amazing insulator! Just sleep on top, or build a snow shelter. We do it on Mt. Hood Oregon every winter! Another pointless REI purchased waste of time!

Check out DD hammocks everything built in and a good price

@gladtidings4all Rei has the Byers amazon moskito for something like $50. It has a built in mosquito netting and maybe weighs a pound, i've used it for years, great hammock. Use a NySil tarp suspended over it and your good to go.

@thecyr Sounds great. I tried using a blanket as an underquilt before (just a really thick fleece blanket) but couldn't figure out how to get the thing set up....I'll have to try again, so I'd love to see a video from you on how to do it.
Thanks for trying the way I suggested though : )
I was wondering what about someone inventing an ultralight silnylon hammock with
A real long zipper to zip you inside for the winter or summer outing it would prevent Mosquitos and or snow or rain getting you wet?

@gladtidings4all have you seen the hammocks made by warbonnet? it sounds similar to what you describe.

I just got a Hennessey deep jungle hammock. Slept great in the snow and rain and will never sleep on the ground again. I would get the bigger tarp though but is still awsome.

@turknasty my favorite piece of gear until the fall was the hennessey hex tarp, it was fabulous. But after my last outing in November, I will be moving onto something else for colder weather.

TRY IT THIS WAY! The way I am about to suggest will ALWAYS be warmer than a tent.
You have to SURROUND the hammock with the sleeping bag. Feed the the hammock in through the opening, then out the bottom zipper (most mummy bags will have this option). Basically you string it THROUGH the sleeping bag. This way, you will not need a pad because the sleeping bag WILL BLOCK the wind and you will get the maximum warmth from your bag BECAUSE THERE IS NO COMPRESSION OF THE FILL. Promise you'll like it.

@HammockerSam Now that I've had an opportunity to refine my hammock setup, I've moved to a DIY army/ranger blanket rig as an underquilt. I haven't done a specific video on it, but there is a hanging weekend coming up in a few weeks.
I did use the sleeping bag method you describe, but I need some sewing skills to fix the ends since it was not a mummy bag I was using.
