Chinese sleeve dances originate from ancient times when they were performed for royalty during special occasions. Long sleeves not only represent elegance and beauty but also convey many emotions such as joy, sorrow, sadness, and innocence. In this particular piece which incorporates elements of both traditional and contemporary dance, the colors red and white intertwine to symbolize passion and sadness and to tell a story of war and love. As a warrior is engaged in intense battle, a beautiful princess sorrowfully waits for his return, and their reunion is celebrated by the sound of joyful drumbeats.
