George Weigel teaches us Vatican II set the Church free from the Babylonian Captivity that started with Constantine and continued with popes like Boniface VIII, Innocent III, and Pius IX. The papacy was a negative obstacle to the freedom movements in Europe (French Revolution, Italian Unification, Spanish Peoples War against Franco, etc) and Vatican II removed the threat of Church interference in state power, so that political actions can be guided by more capable hands. George Weigel correctly called this tumultuous 1700 year period of the Church: the Babylonian Captivity. Now the Church can turn her attention to more important matters: freedom for all humanity, including religious liberty - the freedom to believe in whatever God you choose.
Corruption is part of life on earth. Weigel has been influenced by protestant ideas. A very biased perspective. There have been many many holy emperors and kings, doges, regents and other heads of state. the Church and state connection of the past was natural and more harmonious than people admit. It is a far too complex matter for his flippant simplification.

"Fr. Richard John Neuhaus the Great"? Are you kidding me? He was about as liberal and anti-tradition as you can get. His religion started with Vatican II and does not resemble 2000 years of Catholic teaching. Neo-conservatism is more dangerous than modernism and liberalism. Nothing more than Protestantism wrapped with pseudo-Catholic paper.

You'be been Neo-Conned! Neo-Cons like Weigel and Fr V Twomey, Fr Fessio may look Catholic on the surface but actually hate Catholic tradition. Their's is a new religion - not the Catholic one. Weigel's recent attack on Pope Benedict XVI in regards the reconciliation of SSPX shows his true colours. Cardinal George was correct when he said liberal Catholicism was a parasite - which lives off a substance it cannot reproduce. Weigel was a Protestant - this shows he really never changed.

This guy is a heretic plain and simple. How dare he have the audacity to call himself Catholic. He sounds more like a liberal and modernist Protestant.
