The actions of the Cubans at the time of Cuito Cuanavale undermines their propaganda claims. At the end of 1987, as they were supposedly winning their decisive victory, the Cubans were suing for peace with SA, asking for an honorable withdrawal, and the Soviets were openly saying that they could not win in Angola. Given that the Communists were facing a single regular SADF battalion in Angola, 61 Mechanized Battalion, any claims of Cuban military effectiveness are simply laughable.
Its too bad that the Cuban Air Force spent their time doing victory rolls over your flak guns rather than doing anything useful on the battlefield. Even if the SADF had hypothetically been defeated at Cuito Cuanavale it would have been FAPLA troops that one the battle, not Cuban ones. In spite of overwhelming numerical superiority the Cubans failed to achieve anything on the ground in Angola.
'The People's Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola have not been able either, even with the help of the Cubans, to decisively defeat the enemy and drive him out of the territory or the country. The result, frankly speaking, was an impasse.' Given that the Communist forces in Angola were Soviet led, these remarks from a senior Soviet adviser would be remarkable in the wake of 'kicking Boer arse the f**k out of Angola', wouldn't they? 3,000 SADF troops stalemated 75,000 FAPLA and Cubans.
The fact that in spite of not having air superiority the heavily outnumbered SAAF in Angola could provide air support from Mirages and Impalas with impunity is a tribute to its qualitative superiority and a failure of the Cuban Air Force. South African Operations Modular, Hooper and Packer were a total success. They repulsed the FAPLA offensive, routed the retreating elements and drove them west of the Cuito River. A lightly armed 3,000 man SADF force thus routed FAPLA and severely defeated Cuba
The SADF was crushed at Cuito Carnival. 3 SADF attacks were repulsed. The SADF and Unita lost thousands of men, dead in minefields that their engineers did not clear first. The SADF had no air cover and no means to shoot down Cuban Migs. PW Botha was thrown out of power by his party when he refused to acknowledge that the writing was on the wall, that the war was over and that South Africa had lost. Today still, many SADF soldiers of that time don't understand that they were defeated.
This is simply Red propaganda. The only thing more disgusting than a Red is a traitor. You are a traitor (if you ever served). If you ever studied the battle you would know that your posts here are utter nonsense. Firstly no SADF orders ever mentioned Cuito Cuanavale, there was not a single attack on the town. The Battle took the form of the destruction of FAPLA brigades east of the river. 6 Cuban MiGs were shot down to one SAAF Mirage. Cuban air support was utterly ineffective.
Have you been to a re-education camp since 1994? You should be well aware that the Communist Party line on any issue is usually absolute garbage. The Cubans and FAPLA claimed propaganda victory by 'holding Cuito Cuanavale', impressive given that it was never attacked. Military analysts believe that the Cubans recognized after witnessing the SADF's enormous qualitative military superiority at Cuito Cuanavale that further military confrontation would not succeed.
The only forces that 'lost thousands of men' were FAPLA and UNITA. The SADF lost 31 men. Not bad for a crushing operational victory that crippled FAPLA's ability to attack the Caprivi strip, in spite of being outnumbered at least 6-1 (not counting worthless UNITA troops). Its not hard to believe that many SADF veterans don't recognize that they were defeated; I see nothing to support that view. Please don't post Communist propaganda in future; some of us take our history seriously!
you absoluutly reg n right..soviets counsel cubans to scape the area and save themselves...Russian book tells you all now...SADF were only politically refusing a victory in hand
