-
good climbing, they must be exausted after that climb.

the legs did not collaps because of rust, the riging was damaged by the first storm, riggers were sent out but stayed onboard the tender unknown by the staff of caroline. during the next big one more insulators broke and wires snapped ,the rear legs shatterd as the mast leand forwards because of metal fatigue, putting all the wieght on the front leg crushing the botton 12 inches like you'd crush a beer can. the rest is history. was on the ross 24-11-09 seen the damage done.

A structure like that needed constant painting, as any steel structure at sea requires. The main support legs were too small, and not protected INTERNALLY from rust.
But it was a hell of a storm. Great ship, great peple.
People shopuld ask the question why did they need to go to sea to gives us great radio... Britain a Police state radio wise...?
Good luck Caroline

Was! It had an unfortunate collapse in the fall of 1987 off the coast of Kent. Pulled the ship over into a 17 degree list to starboard that night. Support crew from Dunkirk arrived a several hours later to drop torches over to cut it free and the tower was gone! It was a sad and helpless night for those of us that had seen here ride out many of Force 12!
