I don't think it's really selfish to make a good deed, because it's sort of your reward when you feel good :) If it is selfish to feel good, we practically can't do anything we enjoy. Selfish means solely for your own benefit. Sorry, Joe, you're wrong xD

@HLFracture Yes it was. His happiness was a means to an end - an end which was her happiness. The fact that she is the type of person where it is anothers happiness - rather than anothers misery - that causes her joy is what makes her a natural, good person. This does not make her deed any less selfish or any less good.

But WHY did she feel good? Only as a secondary consequence of someone OTHER than herself feeling good. Hence the fundamental "goodness" of the deed was not about herself.

It is not relevant whether her happiness is dependant on her brother feeling good - what is relevant is whether her primary motivation was to make herself or her brother feel good. I too, believe all deeds are selfish, and I find it does not make it harder to be a good person - on the contrary. I would say that Phoebe's action was a selfish good deed.

It's not true that there is no selfless good deed. Phoebe felt good after delivering those babies BECAUSE it made her brother feel good. Her feeling of goodness was wholly dependent on the feelings of those she is helping. Joey, on the other hand, only wanted to be on TV, and his happiness from his deed was not dependent on anyone being helped. Therefore, Phoebe's is selfless, as her happiness didn't derive from herself but from someone else's happiness.
