Is this all at the same time? What did you use for bait, and what time of day were you fishing (tides, and sun)?

I agree that is this not the best for the fish, but it is not the same as being held underwater for 3 minutes. 1) the fish has a much, much slower metabolism than a human and such needs less oxygen. 2) if their gills remain wet they can partially extract very small percentages of oxygen from the air, how small I'm not sure.
A human can only live for 2 minutes without oxygen unless they are trained (divers, swimmer, athletes, etc.)
