@CMink7777 I don't think that's anything nasty it the water. The waves pick up sand as they get close to shore, that's what builds up (and tears down) the sand bars and the beaches.

@JeffDeWitt - most of the rivers in western MI are tinted very brown by tannin coming from swampy areas. Perfectly natural, perfectly healthy. But your observation is excellent, especially true when it comes to waves near shore - they inevitably carry a lot of sand. Some big hits I have seen are totally brown and they are on the other side of the pier!
