This is me playing through a pseudo-hard mode in my Battle City hack. The game would normally start with no more than 4 tanks at once, spawned a long time apart. This number of tanks and spawn speed (which I enabled through RAM editing) is more akin to what you'll see after 20 levels or so. The second quest will feature faster spawning rates and more difficult tanks.
This video shows off a number of new things I've added to the game. The most obvious is that enemies may now spawn at more than 3 locations that are uniquely defined per level. There's also a new item placement system, where each stage gets one item (currently randomly decided, but I may make that optional) that appears in one of two set locations at random. The star item has been removed to make room for the new upgrade system, which upgrades you when you shoot a red tank. The extra man is also gone; instead, the player will have to kill 50 enemy tanks to get another life. Each tank is a single kill, so the old point system has been done away with. Also, more observant viewers will notice that I've changed the enemy format; enemies are now defined individually rather than in no more than 4 groups of identical tanks. Items are chosen per enemy rather than specific tanks always having the items. The four player tanks may also be used as enemies without any graphical issues and the shielded enemy tank may be used with any level of shield rather than just level 3.
There are some other changes going on under the hood, but that's most of it for now. There's a slight bug in the item upgrade code I need to figure out that shows up at the end of stage 3, but it had no effect on gameplay.
Enjoy.
Glad you're enjoying it. Wish I were so easily inspired to do hacking! Game design is far more interesting for me in general and has been demanding a lot more of my attention as of late. Hopefully I'll get around to finishing this hack at some point.

Thanks for the interest. I intend to release a version of my hack with the specifics stripped out so that people can make use of my modified Battle City engine for their hacks. The added freedom with enemies and such really allows for better, more interesting level design, so perhaps it'll help people make some more intense and entertaining hacks.
