Like for a car, but for my apartment. Wirelessly lock and unlock the apartment deadbolt lock with the touch of a button, using a wireless receiver board, an Arduino microcontroller, some LEDs, a speaker, and most importantly, a servo to turn the deadbolt. Also implemented an analog distance sensor to tell if someone approaches from inside the door, to unlock the door automatically.
The idea behind this project is that one can implement it without altering the door in any permanent way. Since i rent, i can't go drilling holes or installing custom security hardware in my door, because it's not really my door. The circuit boards and distance sensor are fixed to the door with rare-earth magnets over electrical tape. The servo is bolted to a mounting device (i made it by bending an old PC speaker cover and cutting a rectangular hole in which to mount to servo. The mount itself fits snugly behind the deadbolt screw cover thingy; i simply loosen the existing deadbolt cover and slip my mount behind it, then tighten the deadbolt again. Sounds weird, but as you can see it works. And the whole thing can be taken down without a trace in a matter of seconds.
More details, writeup, and schematics to come...
