Omg. I live in Mangalore. What a beautiful journey this is! the forests and hills look so amazing! I have travelled by bus and i couldn't see much. train is the best. jai hind. We must protect these forests.

A few relatives who were British engineers involved in the construction of the Indian railways. Just interesting. George Henry Bayly was an engineer in the P.W.D. in the Province of Mysore. William Arthur Johns; b 1858. In 1881 went to India as Engineer in the PWD, employed in the construction of State Railways & the survey of new lines. Edward Henry Johns: b 1855. He was appointed Engineer. PWD India in November 1877, First in Bangalore, then Mysore, Mooltan, Sukkur &Trishinopoly.

@Catie250550 This is good information. Thank you. Railways were first introduced to India in 1853. By 1947, the year of India's independence, there were forty-two rail systems. In 1951 the systems were nationalised as one unit, becoming one of the largest networks in the world. IR operates both long distance and suburban rail systems on a multi-gauge network of broad, metre and narrow gauges. It also owns locomotive and coach production facilities
