Also, I'd like to add that nVidia has had more experience and stability in Linux for quite awhile while ATi is quite a bit behind, they are improving rather fast. nVidia far ahead as compared to ATi. In addition, gnome-shell is currently the only DE that has had this problem as far as I know.
Actually, that's not true nor does it make sense. The drivers control certain functions of the card. To not have a _native_ OpenGL API would simply mean that its not using either the Linux driver kit or its not using the video card.
Either way, please remember that ATI's drivers have always had a few problems. They've already fixed this problem and I no longer have this issue. It was an incompatibility issue with the X.org server that Fedora was using.
This is why unity rules and gnome shell drools (other then lousy window navigation)

all linux distros have issues with ati. have the cards dont have a native opengl api. lazy developers.
