Kris Gilbertson's Lifestyle Entrepreneur Expert Scott Smith shares in this interview:

Scott Smith, How to Create a Solid 6 Figure Business From Podcasting expert began his career as a self-described "shock jock," but you would never know it from his career today. Scott began as a radio DJ in Fort Lauderdale in 1978 and worked his way up the ladder, landing a job as a TV producer. When the plush new job added 80 pounds to Scott's waistline, he decided it was time to lose some weight. And that was the start of his new career.

Losing weight reignited Scott's passion for martial arts and kickboxing and he soon found himself leading classes. Traditional online marketing segued into podcasting for Scott and his show, Motivation to Move, was eventually syndicated on FM.

But then things took a turn. Scott's wife's cancer came back and she was given a terminal diagnosis. Scott and his family packed up everything and went to Costa Rica for a final vacation. Even while he was away, Scott maintained his podcast, only taking a three-week break three months later when his wife died.

When he came back, Scott connected even more with his audience. His honesty worked and Scott had 400 people sign up in the first week after he relaunched his podcast. He emphasizes the value of originality in the podcasting world and the importance of separating yourself from the crowd. "From a marketing standpoint I make myself a category of one," Scott says. "There are 200,000 podcasters and only one school of Scott where you can learn Scott logic."

For a podcast to be successful, Scott says that you have to find your sweet spot in terms of duration, format, and frequency. There is an art to balancing these three elements and Scott says that the perfect formula should leave the listener saying "Oh man, it's already over?" when it's finished.

The secret to creating a bankable podcast, Scott says, is providing a service that people feel that they absolutely need. Nobody wants to pay a membership fee, but if you create a product that is enticing enough, it'll be worth it to them to hand over the $19.95/month.

What ultimately makes podcasting successful for Scott is the content behind it." I'm not a podcaster," Scott says. "I'm a content creator. I'm a motivational guy. That's what I do. Podcasting is nothing more than a medium for me." Podcasting is a great marketing medium but at the end of the day, it's your content that will drive listeners and your business.
