Opuntienspinne, Opuntia-spider Cyrtophora citricola

The Opuntia-spider (Cyrtophora citricola) is common at Mediterranean regions. It belongs to the Tent-web spiders (Cyrtophora), which built a tent-like, highly complex non-sticky web. Brood cocoons and spiderlings can be seen as well as the impressive thanatosis behaviour of an adult female.

Die Opuntienspinne (Cyrtophora citricola) ist im Mittelmeerraum weit verbreitet. Die Netze der Opuntienspinne zählen zu den komplexesten Spinnennetzen -- für den Bau benötigen die Weibchen mehrere Nächte. Die Spinne baut ein horizontales Radnetz, das einen Durchmesser von 50 bis 60 Zentimetern erreicht. Die Netzmitte ist trichterförmig nach oben erweitert; dort befindet sich das Versteck der Spinne.
