No actually the Pirates of the Caribbean movies were inspired by Monkey Island almost completely. Several years ago there was a Monkey Island film comishioned by Lucas Arts employing writter Ted Elliot who also worked on the games. The movie was then scrapped and nothing happened for a while untill disney decided to make the potc films guess who the writter is? Ted Elliot. Have you not noticed similaritys to MI1? Ghost pirates, voodo ladies that kind of thing.

the original Monkey Island game came more than a decade before the pirates of the caribbean movies..

However, the Pirates of the Caribbean ride came out back in 1964 in Disneyland out in California. THAT ride, which was recreated in Disney World, is what the movie is based off of, and what Monkey Island is a tongue in cheek parody of.

Totally true; no arguments there. It's also interesting that the movies, which came out later, have certain subtle nods to Monkey Island. Ongoing mutual tributes.
