Mycotoxins 101

My name is Dr. Duarte Diaz. I'm a Marketing Manager for Novus International, and my areas of expertise are mycotoxins and organic acids.

Mycotoxins cause problems for animal production because they are fungal secondary metabolites, which can either irritate intestinal tissue or reduce absorption of key ingredients, impact immune system, or impact, key vital organs that are important for animal production

Mycotoxins are seen in pretty much just about any type of feed ingredient utilized in livestock production. Because molds are ubiquitous in nature they really are found in just about any area of the world. Prevalence of mycotoxins is dependent on agronomical practices or geographical environmental conditions. So corn, soy, and small grains can be, frequently contaminated with mycotoxins.

Most animal species are susceptible to mycotoxins and their effects. Their sensitivity to these compounds is going to be dependent on whether their production level, their conditions ... other stress conditions, and the concentrations of the individual mycotoxins, and the combinations of those mycotoxins.
