To many the rebirth of the canal system has seen many canals that were once allowed to go derelict be given a new life bringing pleasure to both boaters and non-boaters alike. Not everyone shares this view and some don't want their local canal to come back to life. This piece from 2003 shows resistance from landowners to restoration of the Cotswold Canals.

  • When canals were originally planned they had similar problems with land owners - look into places like the "Tixall Broad" where the canal was made to look like a lake to not spoil the view of the landowner when he looked out of his Hall.

  • How does the guy know that people on canal boats don't go to restaurants? Has he asked them all?

Has he seen the Gas Street Basin since the canals were restored there? There are a few restaurants and pubs there now and they're often quite busy.

    What a muppet.

"It's like German propaganda during the war"

    No it isn't.

That bit of the canal could always be rerouted a bit.

  • yeah, restore it! Many more would enjoy this land than them.

  • Selfish Toffs...the countryside is for all of us to enjoy - bring on the canal...

  • I would want to have a abondoned canal that was in my back yard restored.

  • Pompous NIMBYs! Restore the Cotswold Canal!
