  • Feel free to correct me but as far as I know, WC is not Shaolin. Though it was created by a Shaolin Nun, it was created to defeat the Shaolin styles due to Manchu spying and learning the Shaolin styles.

  • Wing Chun was taught withing the temples from very early on in the style and continued to be used as an introduction to center-line styles like Southern Praying mantis and White Eyebrow. It was also possible to major exclusively in the style.

  • Sorry, with all due respect Todei is correct. There is no historical evidence it was ever taught at any Temple. Even the Oral accounts name Ng Mui an alleged budhist Nun as teaching her style to Yim Wing Chun (After destruction of the temple). WC is not a precursor to SPM or Bak Mei they are distinct arts in themselves. For more information examine the history of the Red Junk Opera etc... Further read Meir Shahir's work on Shaolin to get more historical truth about shaolin. Best of luck.

  • Gwosau, thanks for your comment. The oral tradition that has come to me is that Wing Chun was incorporated into the curriculum of the temples and was the first centerline style taught. Masters of SPMantis or Bak Mei almost always mastered Wing Chun first. Wing Chun was also one of the styles taught to lay people up to a certain level of mastery, whereas SPM and Bak Mei were never taught to non-desciples. Thanks for clarifying that WC is a unique style. It is a precursor only in training order.

  • regarding the origins of Wing Chun, the stories vary greatly... No one has any right to actually say one person is right or wrong.

Some say it was created by the 5 elders by mixing the styles (I go by this because I see hints of the others in Wing Chun)

Some say it was created by the nun alone

Some say it was always there within the temple

Some say it was made by rebels in a temple

The variations change by lineage and everything. No one answer.

  • @Gwohsau You cant see the forrest due to all of the trees. Think about it, if a Buddhist Nun taught the style we call Wing Chun, where do you think she learned it? Even though this oral account of Wing Chun is myth on the exterior, there is a deeper underlying meaning, such as other historical accounts of Kung Fu system origins hidden in the form of poems and such. And if you really know of the Red Boat Opera, you should know it's ties to Wing Chun. Go research more, best of luck.

  • Sil Lum means Shaolin, and we all do Sil Lum Tao form.

  • @ameden71 Excuse me friend but whose lineage are you under. I was searching for Garrett Gee's Hung Fa Yi and your video popped up.

  • @todei79 i thought wing chun was created by Bruce Lee??

    lol jkjk

  • @Gwohsau The only proofs are of the different lineages. You can tell which ones are more Shaolin Influence. Ng Mui, however is special because she had to turn away from how the temple represented the system. With her, she had to make it more simplistic. She did this and it became the Wing Chun as most of us know under GGM Yip (Ip) Man. There is no proof though of actual temple teachings of Wing Chun and no proof of Ng Mui either. However these can just be names for true identities in time.
