Some more of the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad entertainment at BOB's Gallery 163 East Pender Street, Vancouver
The sheng, an ancient Chinese reed instrument, is essentially a connected set of vertical bamboo pipes. Musicians push air in and out of those pipes, activating the reed and creating notes and chords. With Sheng High, an ingenious sound sculpture, the Seattle-based artist Trimpin harnesses the force of water and an intricate arrangement of pipes, tripods, scanners and infrared sensors to create a wondrous wall of sound. Viewers can connect the visual patterns on the wall with the natural symphony happening all around them.
