AROWANA BREEDING IN INDIA

Arowana, called dragon fish by Chinese is rewriting history. In a rare incidence, this large size exotic aquarium fish hailing from Africa, Australia and some parts of South East Asia have successfully bred in captivity in an Indian hatchery.

Arowanas which can even grow upto four feet long is one of the most expensive varieties of the aquarium fish.

This exotic fish which is believed to bring in good luck and prosperity to the owners costs anywhere between Rs 15,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh depending on its variety, size and colour.

This is the fish hatchery in Perumbavoor, in the South Indian State of Kerala, where a Arowana has been successfully bred in captivity.

Once the male Arowana is found carrying in his spacious mouth full of eggs laid by his female partner, it is caught from the open tank and the eggs are carefully squeezed out of its mouth into another tank.

The process of catching the " egg carrying male" is delicate and needs good expertise.

The orange coloured eggs with the tadpole like Arowana babies clinging to it is a fest to the eyes. They are then allowed to cross their post-natal stage in special tanks that have the right temperature of around 23 degress centigrade.
Arowana fish is highly temperature sensitive. So it is of paramount importance that the temperature of the tanks in which they are kept. If it is too warm it might cause them to age faster, but can shorten their life. A to could temperature might on the other hand kill them.

The new born Arowanas get all its nutrients from the egg for at least 40 days when they become matured enough to feed on their own
Young Arowana Fish may be fed frozen or live brine shrimp, black worms, and even small fish.
Baby Arowana Fish should be fed maybe 3 times a day, medium sized twice a day, and adults once a day, or even once every other day.
Variety is important for a well balanced diet in Arowana Fish just like for most other fish.
The proprietors of this hatchery are on top of the world now, Not just because they are all set to make big money out of these Arowana babies, but mainly because of the fact that they have successfully managed breeding these coveted fish in the India

there is no evidence shown that reds or golds are bred here. they might be able to breed greens easy enough. domestically bred arowana might just mean domestic silvers and greens.
