Sonata for Arpeggione and Piano by Franz Schubert (1824). Performed May 22, 2010 by Rudolf Haken (five-string viola pomposa) and Sun-Hee Kim (piano), Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Audio recording by Jon Schoenoff. Viola pomposa designed and built by David Rivinus.
The Arpeggione was a six-string fretted bowed instrument invented by J.G. Staufer, tuned like a guitar and played like a cello. Rudolf Haken's transcription of the arpeggione part is for a five-string viola pomposa tuned as a combined viola and violin.
