China's east coast has been hit by heavy rains and winds travelling at speeds of up to 110 miles an hour as typhoon Muifa moves north along the coast. State media reported that thousands of residents were evacuated.

Typhoon Muifa lashed densely-populated eastern China as it continued to move north along the coast on Monday morning, state media reported.

Although Muifa has weakened as it travels north along the coast, state media reported that Qidong in Jiangsu province was hit by the fastest winds ever recorded in the area.

Local elderly residents were evacuated to temporary shelters on Sunday in case buildings collapsed.

[Mao Xiaonu, Local Resident]:
"People from the village evacuated us because the building wasn't safe."

Winds tore branches from trees, damaged gates and ripped posters off the top of buildings.

Further north near Qingdao city in Shandong province, tourists and local residents were stranded on a small island as the sea surrounding it became rough on Sunday.

Local firemen helped around 30 tourists return to the mainland along the small sea road as large waves lashed the coast.

To prevent damage, more than 2,000 fishing boats were secured at harbour in northern China's largest fishing port of Rongcheng in Shandong province, in anticipation of stormy seas on Monday. Local fishermen have taken extra precautions.

"What we are most worried about is the boats hitting each other. We have taken a lot of precautions, we added tyre bumpers to the boats and secured them with ropes, to guard against damage the typhoon might cause."

Live TV footage from Rongcheng on Monday morning showed a stormy sea and rain, as the storm moved past around 62 miles out to sea.

Having weakened, Muifa is not expected to cause serious damage to the mainland.
