The 'Via Dolorosa' is supposedly the road Christ walked while carrying his cross to the crucifixion. Jerusalem and the Temple were destroyed in AD 70, and Jerusalem was completely destroyed again in AD 135, when the Roman emperor Hadrian built the pagan city Aelia Capitolina and the temple to Jupiter Capitolinus on the sites, building a road for his troops to quickly move through the city. It was this road that is today called the Via Dolorosa.
