While fire protection has always been and always will be primarily a local government responsibility, the the federal government clearly has a role to play. On Sept. 11, when terrorists attacked the Pentagon, they were not attacking Arlington, VA, but America. When Hurricane Katrina overwhelmed St. Bernard Parish, LA it was a problem faced by all Americans. When this occurs, it is local fire departments that respond. The federal role is to help fire fighters have resources to protect the public.
