Kirk Dunn speaks about knitting a 5 by 9 foot installation about Christianity in the form of stained glass. This is the first of four windows, three of which represent Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The windows intertwine traditional imagery and symbolism, with visual references to the combative relationship each faith has had with the others. The fourth and final window will represent a synthesis of what the three faiths have in common, and a hopeful projection of what they could be together.
Through the populist craft of knitting, Kirk hopes to transform the elitist, fragile art of stained glass into an accessible, pliable one, replacing the fragmented and brittle pieces of the glaziers with the connected and interwoven needlework of the knitter. I hope to change not only the windows form, but, more importantly, their content. In exposing Christianity, Judaism, and Islams rose-coloured portrayal of their faiths faiths which share the same genesis I hope to reflect more honestly their history of conflict, and finally knit them together in the hope of a more peaceful future.
