A recent report from the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization shows the pace of deforestation worldwide slowed in the last decade. Clearing land for farming remains the leading cause of deforestation. But in Haiti, the loss of tree cover -- and the erosion that results -- have made it much harder for farmers to grow food. It's a major contributor to the country's hunger problems. But VOA's Steve Baragona found efforts are underway to try to return trees to Haiti's denuded hills.
El Salvador was just like Haiti, but after the civil war and land reform many forest have sprouted where people moved away, about 15% of El Salvador is covered in forest when at one time they had no forests at all, it took about 20 years for trees to grow back. Haitian people must understand the importance of trees and how it affects their environment. Good luck to them!

That vetiver hedge is not adequate. Too many holes it wont do its job. The Eucalyptus seen planted is a good short term fuel species but not long term answer to hydrology. Better to mix with other adapted species like Neem, Acacia, Caliandra, Albizzia and Casuarina in early stages. Bamboo for charcoal production and native hardwoods like mahogany for long term.
