Unfortunately C&W artists today don't even come CLOSE to the quality of classic bands like the Outlaws and Lynyrd Skynyrd..at best it's a cheap immitation. They don't even play guitar solos...

That's true Greg; it has a Very Strong Emotional quality to it! BTW, I am NOT a fan of most Country Music! I LOVE Southern Rock; Classic Rock; Most of today's Rock, Metal and the like. One band I cannot believe I did NOT mention, is Molly Hatchet! And yes, they do tend to group certain artists in a given category, such as someone like Madonna in the Rock category; most place .38 Special in the POP category! What?!? Take care!

Thanks for the reply, Cowboy. Yes, I acknowledge that my experience with Country & Western music is pretty limited. But from what I've heard, it seems like a large number of modern bands that folks pin that label on use a lot of the same kinds of musical techniques as the ones pioneered by the bands you cited above. I guess I really cotton to MTB's "Fire on the Mountain" because of the history behind the tale the song tells, and I DO love history.

Greg, I would put this song, and many others like it, from bands such as this, Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd, .38 Special, Blackfoot, Mountain, etc. More in the "Southern Rock" category. I know you have your preference, and I really LOVE Fire on the Mountain; however, this song beats it hands down, in my book! This is NOT Country & Western; definitely! For the length, and such, it is kind of a toss-up between this and Kansas' "Song For America!"

My favorite Outlaws song and one of my favorite southern rock tunes of all time (edged out of first place only slightly my Marshall Tucker's "Fire on the Mountain"). Maybe I don't know my Country & Western music very well, but it seems like the music that the Outlaws, The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and other southern rock bands were playing back in the 70's is very similar to what contemporary C&W artists are playing today. I find it very hard to hear the difference, anyway. Comments?
