Regarding the "roads were built for cars" idea....It was really smart of cities to build all those roads downtown for cars a few hundred years before the automobile was invented.  That's really thinking ahead! Of course that's just another idiotic statement from people who know nothing of the history of cities, which actually goes back thousands of years, without cars. In the late 1800's, bicycles were all over downtown north american cities before there were cars. Easy to forget that.

Hi monex5 - Bit simplictic. I don't think people are worried about the direct effects. However spreading anti-cycling sentiments or even tolerating them as 'jokes' is very dangerous. Especially in obesity ridden USA where people seriously need to get on thier bike!

Oh wow, as a cyclist, when I heard about this, as someone who cycles everywhere, I naturally got offended. Then I heard what he actually said and kind of agreed. You shouldn't cycle abrest, always stick to the side, and if you're overtaking another cyclist, make sure you're not obstructing traffic. So many fellow cyclists are obnoxious as hell and just like he says. Of course, motorists can be terrible too, acting like you arent there or shouldn't be there, and that just compounds the problem.

cyclists are an underpublicized scourge. pedestrians are becoming the real down trodden. cyclists use our pavements witheir speeding metal and bullet minds. a fart on these pavement abusing two wheelers with places to go. byciscumers.

I can't believe that Tony had to apologize for this. People actually think he was condoning running people with bikes over? PTI is the best sports show on TV and Kornheiser is funnier than a lot of comedians.

calm down..nobody actually is going to risk their livelihoods to run you over...in fact in the years since he said this, i dont believe anyone has said "i ran him over because kornheiser said to". relax..
