Less than eight months since an earthquake and tsunami triggered a major nuclear disaster in Japan, America is poised to approve the first construction licenses for new nuclear plants in three decades.

Anchor Thalia Assuras sits down with Gregory Jaczko, Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, to discuss the U.S. response to the meltdown of the Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant, radioactive waste storage and upcoming decisions about new nuclear reactor construction.

Yeah it is when the other commissioners don't care what lessons there were to learn from Fukushima. Check out Ed Markey's report and the internal NRC emails after 3/11. It's pretty creepy.

Jaczko was the only one of the five commissioners voting to wait and do more safety checks before licensing new plants.

The others didn't like him because he was actually voting for safety.

They all voted to go ahead. Meanwhile it's pretty funny that four commissioners felt bullied by one guy so much they had to go crying to the white house. I'll bet their nuclear overlords didn't like how Jaczko voted.

Nuclear energy is not suitable for highly developed industrialized nations ... they should be able to afford to really clean energy!

They only want to earn quick money at the expense of future generations.

It is a bad investment, because the future will be those responsible to accountable for their costs to account.

"Safe" fissile material is unmined uranium left alone in the ground. The instant the decision is made to mine and risk exposing society to its lethal radiation, safety is subordinated to power and profit. So the NRC actually prevents public safety by supporting the existence of the industry and not mandating the re-burial of all uranium and its products, save what has judicious medical application.
