  • lol sure they do about watermelon and chicken

  • this song is so moving for me . so sad but powerful . her voice is amazing

  • Ecapital46 I love your passion, however, perhaps to read a little bit about Ms. Ethel this song is an irony. The lyrics depicts the sad tales that were told to people of color. Of course we must dream, why Ms. Ethel's life is a portrait of the importance of these dreams. She paved the way for those who haved followed in her foot steps. Be encouraged by this song - that one MUST DREAM!!

  • This is a classic example of what happens when you lack the integrity and backbone to tell the boss you ain't doing this one - either change the song or get somebody else for the film. You have to be willing to be blacklisted rather than insult your people. The enemy won't like it but will respect your refusal. They wouldn't ever approach Billie Holiday to sing shit like this, 'cause she would have told them where to go. Fool Waters is now capture on film for eternity singing an idiot song.

  • lol, love the comments by all the rationalists. This song is total condescending garbage - a black parent singing to her child calling him a darkie and telling him he is not to dream because it will be useless. If plantation slaves had this attitude your dumbasses would still be in slavery. Harriet Tubman dreamed her ass off, then took action to make the dream come true...she didn't wait and slaves were held at gunpoint. This is white propaganda acquiesce to by a talented but fool singer.

  • @nuscholar1979 She went where many a performer feared to tread. She was quite comfortable in her skin. And, yes, you must listen carefully.

  • Nuscholar1972, I hear you LOUD and CLEAR. And thank you!

  • On its face, it's offense. And yet, listen closely and you get the subtle irony. OK, as a Black person I can live with it.

  • it's a song that really tells the truth about what it was about for black folks back then but you can't be this honest today.

  • What a wonderful, telling song. such a song could not be done today.
