LOST HORIZON (1973) Part 4

This 1973 retelling of the classic tale of James Hilton's Utopian lost world plays out as a musical production complete with Bacharach pop music.While escaping war-torn China, a group of Europeans crash in the Himalayas, where they are rescued and taken to the mysterious Valley of the Blue Moon, Shangri-La. Hidden from the rest of the world, Shangri-La is a haven of peace and tranquility for world-weary diplomat Richard Conway(Peter Finch). Here there is no crime, no war, no sickness, no pollution, no sadness and a lifetime may be in the 100s of years. His ambitious brother, George(Michael York), sees it as a prison from which he must escape, even if it means risking his life and bringing destruction to the ancient culture of Shangri-La.

Great beautiful LOST HORIZON!

I think it's a privilege to see this film, but I'm afraid I'm among those that disagree.

The 1937 film was so good, it hurts to see the stills that replace the missing footage from it.

In the fall/winter of 1982, I was a terribly sick 11-year-old who happened to catch this film on daytime TV (ABC I seem to recall) while I was recovering at home. I had only heard the song once after that in a furniture store in 1983 or '84. It's exactly this portion of the film I remember so vividly, and after all this time, I finally found it again. It had that much of an impression on me that I never forgot the song or the scenes. Thank you for posting it.

so far liking this.. never saw the original. But I gotta' crack up at the way they portray women in the 70's! ha.. she's the only one who trips and falls on the climb up there.. she's addicted to pills..gives a good hair toss and then decides to commit suicide! ha! wow.

I Always thaught this story was one of the most Beautiful films ever made

in both Versions of the film, with only one setback. that such a place doesn't really

exist!

i saw this film almost 40 yrs ago...it was the first and the last time i heard of the opening sound and i still have it in my mind. thanks to internet and youtube, i'll be able to see this film again and hear the most beautiful music i've ever heard. Sometimes if librarian/archivists reach out to other libraries internationally film footage can be found. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently found a missing 1927 film in New Zealand.

I enjoyed both films. I agree its a shame about the missing footage in the 1937 version. Hopefully somehow the missing footage will be found. "Things to come" from 1936 I believe also has missing footage. At least most of both films have survived even in abbreviated form.

I would love to buy a copy of this one... but even Amazon does not seem to carry it!  Bummer!
