Former U.S. Senator Gary Hart calls for a NATO-style international organization of liberal democracies to address global issues.

-----

Former U.S. Senator Gary Hart discusses his new book Under the Eagle's Wing: A National Security Strategy of the United States for 2009.

Gary Hart is currently Wirth Chair Professor at the University of Colorado, distinguished fellow at the New America Foundation, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

A thoughtful treatise, Under the Eagle's Wing makes a compelling plea for our upcoming leaders to embrace a new world order, one in which the U.S. and other nations draw strength from a united approach - Tattered Cover Book Store

Gary Hart is an author, lecturer, teacher, scholar, attorney, and former US Senator from Colorado. A candidate in 1984 for the Democratic Party's nomination for president, during 1970-1972 he managed Senator George McGovern's presidential campaign. He has also served as an appellate attorney in the Justice Department, a special assistant at the Department of the Interior, and senior counsel to the international law firm Coudert Brothers.

He co-chaired the US Commission on National Security/21st Century as well as the Council on Foreign Relations' Task Force on Homeland Security. In the Congress he founded the Military Reform Caucus, served on the Senate select committee to investigate the intelligence agencies, and introduced a collection of environmental measures for energy independence.

  • He's arguing for new global institutions that make it easier to apply military force and then cherry picking issues like addressing terrorism and climate change. Local institutions helped the people in New Orleans, while the world's richest national government did nothing. Why would we trust a global government that gets paid for by multinational corporations?

  • Yep. Google "gary hart monkey business." Smart man, all too human.

  • Ha ha ha, would you look at that! it's Mr. Monkey Business himself, still at it preaching to us about the need for a global government. Don't be fooled people. His message isn't new and Gary Hart has been fully discredited as a lier and a cheat. I think we can all agree that this man is evil. It's a fact that he has publicly come out in support of the New World Order.

  • He was an influential foreign policy Democrat in the Senate who in the 1990s headed a commission or committee sometimes referred to as Hart-Rudman (Rudman was a Republican) that dealt with energy and foreign policy issues. I think it made some recommendations, too. It's probably online.

  • NATO helped prevent ww3??? WTF? Where is the evidence for that? That's a pretty bold claim. I'm pretty sure the real story is: the West made NATO, so the Soviets made the Warsaw Pact IN RESPONSE. They didn't make the warsaw pact first and threaten to bomb non-soviet nations, and then we made nato. And plus, how did they "prevent" it exactly? Just by their presence? That's a default "prevention" that anyone could point to, but it doesn't hold water in academia, you ass.

  • Because people who don't fight for their own freedom do not deserve it. Because people who don't know HOW to fight for their own freedom would not know how to maintain it. Additionally, those people would not understand how to balance their own interests against minority populations because culturally they are not prepared for such a task. The illusion that you can deliver peace and democracy is currently being exposed as nothing more than academic fancy. Pick up a newspaper and read about Iraq.

  • Yeah, that is what we need, more World Government.

  • The UN was created because the world was split; remember WWII?

  • It's to bad America doesn't fit your definition of a liberal democracy. Going around the UN isn't going to work. It will just split the world. This is a terrible idea.
