@philessexuk it was more popular during the 17th century for single, old women to be tried as withches. the poor peasant communities needed an excuse to get rid of the people who didn't offer anything to the community (ie old women who couldn't have children and couldn't work the feilds). This got rid of one useless mouth to feed :)
