  • I'm looking to cite this documentary in a paper I'm writing for a World Music course, is there any information available on who created it. I'd really appreciate any information for the bibliography. thanks.

  • The full title of this documentary is "British Rock: the First Wave," produced, written, and directed by Patrick Montgomery and Pamela Page.

Good luck with the paper . . .

  • Is the guy who is talking during the video George Martin?

  • The narrator is Michael York, British actor.

  • Skiffle was ironic: American folk music had roots in English and Irish immigrants of the 17th century. The guitar, an Arabian invention, found it's way to England Via Spain, and became very popular amongst rural folk. The old English songs were soon mixed in a soup made up of many different styles: Blues, Bluegrass, cotton picking songs, Gospel and railroad songs. Add the electric guitar and drums and you get the best music: Rock and Roll!

  • "England emerged from the shadow of World War II only to be faced with a new threat... American rock-n-roll."

  • @NimblewillBill Ha, You beat me to it.

  • OMG It's Edith Prickly at 1:23,I didn't know she was a Rock&Roll pioneer before working for SCTV. This is a revelation !

  • Thanks for this. I am looking forward to seeing the rest. I particularly liked the clips from "Oh Boy!" Cliff Richard, Marty Wild, Billy Fury and Dickie Pride all singing together. I remember it well. My brother in law was in a skiffle group, replacing Jet Harris who went on to play bass for Cliff.

    Happy new year to ya!

  • I love the nod to skiffle! Lonnie Donogan was amazing!

  • it sure looks a bit like alan price at 2.29 ..not saying it is tho

  • Hey! At 1:22, isn't that Edith Prickley from SCTV? :D

  • @EbsNhexz Thank you for that insightful reply. Lovely. : )

  • @Khultan Granted not famous, it was the 60s the mainstream industry had a lot of bollocks to sort out and only signed female singers. My auntie played the banjo back then...like I said the guitar was not automatically the centrepice of skiffle. Lennon's mother tough him how to play, and most of the people who picked up a skiffle kit are anonymous nowadays as it was an underground scene. The actual performing was more popular with males, but the scene itself wasn't gender exclusive.

  • @EbsNhexz Name 'em.
