Alex Higgins, one of snooker's most talented players, explains to Jim White why his love for the game remains undimmed, despite over a decade away from the competitive arena, a ten year battle against throat cancer and vocal chords damaged in a fight.

  • @Adunatii You're not an idiot for acknowledging reality. The reality is that cigarettes and alcohol killed him. Yes, he was a genious and a fantastic snooker player, but that doesn't change reality. Don't go around calling people idiots for stupid reasons.

  • For most of his adult life Higgins often smoked up to 60 cigarettes a day. He had cancerous growths removed from his mouth in 1994 and 1996. In June 1998, he was found to have throat cancer; on 13 October of that year, he had throat surgery. In 2009, Higgins lived in a caravan. In spring 2010, he had pneumonia. Despite his illness he continued to smoke cigarettes and drink heavily until the end of his life.

    Sad end, but its all about choices.

  • @TomRiding16 i think you have to know that there is still life outside of snooker for these players, and I think also that people put a little too much pressure on them and expect too much from them at times, thats just my opinion though

  • @gordonwilliamshaw very true, i mean i wasnt born in the 70s, and Alex was well before my era, but you know, theres enough footage of the dude playing to be checked out, so no course you don't have to be old to know he was a great player.

  • @ColinPRS yeah for real agree. Jimmy White's awesome, he may never have won a title, but just because you don't win something and you get bad luck does not make you not a great and entertaining player, personally I think too many people put a little too much importance on just winning. Its not the most important thing, its more important to be a great sport firstly i think,
