Lattice Multiplication

Introduced to Europe in 1202 in Fibonacci's Liber Abaci, it is a method of multiplying large numbers using a grid.

This guy took a very long time to complete this problem, but it's not like you have to write every little thing down once you get the hang of it. It's best used for larger multiplication problems, not small ones that you can usually do in your head.

How is this any different from the multiplication they teach in elementary school? You're just writing the digits in slightly different positions and delaying some of the carries...
